About Princess Cruises
Princess Cruises has a long history dating back to just before World War II and the beginning of ocean cruising. On May 2, 1969, P&O Princess Cruises was formally created by the merger of Perth-based P&O Lines and UK-based Australia’s Orient Line. In 1970, P&O Princess Margaret was the first ship built for the newly formed company; it was followed by the rest of the original six ships in 1971 and 1972. In 1975, P&O Princess Cruises merged with Hawaii’s Matson Navigation Company to form one of the largest cruise fleets in the world at that time. That same year marked Princess Cruises’ debut on “The Love Boat”, which would be part of their advertising for years to come. Through an agreement with Paul Gauguin Cruises, in 1980 Matson Navigation Company became the owner of Princess Ships and operated them under contract with Princess Cruises.
