About Barclays
Barclays was formed on 17th July 1836, when John Freame Bishop and Thomas Jenkins deposited £5000 each in a bank in London. The next day they opened a banking business as ‘Bishop & Co’, in Lombard Street, near to the Mansion House. Their first customer was William Railway, who had just arrived in England with his American partner and needed £500 for their business venture. Within two years of opening, the bank had moved to number 16 Lombard Street.
